The fresh scent of evergreen, the delight of colorful garlands and lights, the sounds of festive music are sure signs of the holiday season that so many of us have longed for during a year filled with so much uncertainty. In fact, many of us called forth the holiday spirit early by decorating our residences and personal spaces months in advance, in an effort to shift our focus from pandemic fatigue and financial fears to uncomplicated joys. However simple, these joyous expressions offer profound relief and renewal, at least in part due to their familiarity. Whether it be favorite Christmas tree decorations lovingly hung every year, handmade treasures by children or grandchildren, or candlesticks and Menorahs from past generations, the objects which enhance our physical world this time of year often evoke deeper feelings of hope and happiness.
For us at Folie à Trois, one constant source of joy during the holidays is the enduring allure of good design. A well-crafted antique table set for an Advent meal, the patina of old silver serving pieces, the elegance of a vintage French console stacked with porcelain and fine linens not only stand the test of time, but speak to what’s truly valuable in our life’s journeys. Our imaginations are piqued by envisioning “former lives” for beloved period pieces found in the boutiques and markets of France, as they are stirred when reflecting on ancestors who first used our now heirloom items as part of their holiday traditions.
Our colleagues and partners, Margo and Lance Hayes, embody that sensibility as “style icons nonpareils.” This edition of Le Journal’s Galerie features photographs of holiday decor in both the Hayes’ main residence and in their French guesthouse, “une belle maison des invités.” Their venues represent nothing short of visual masterpieces when it comes to celebrating a change of seasons, redefining indoor and outdoor spaces, or just elevating our day-to-day experiences — true gifts to the senses, as well as to the spirit. Margo and Lance, we turn our eyes and hearts to you for inspiration, for comfort, and for a chance to escape into a more elegant and lovely world.
Perhaps the most important gift we can give ourselves and each other at this time is permission to pause, to remember, and to rest in the promises of a brighter year ahead. Whatever this season means to you, we at Folie wish you first and foremost, a sense of peace and well-being, even if it only comes in fleeting moments as we enjoy the displays and distractions before us. May the magnificence of these outward signs also reflect in our “inner landscapes” now, and as we look ahead to a brighter New Year. Happy Holidays, everyone!
